# Check which Medicare program could help you.

Suppose you hear that Medicare has a new weight-medicine program. You want to know whether that headline applies to your own treatment.

## Ordinary drug coverage still leaves out weight-loss use

The Medicare benefit for prescription medicines goes by the name Part D. Keep the reason for treatment beside the medicine name when asking about it.

As of September 2026, the ordinary Part D benefit still excludes drugs when they are used for weight loss.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

In September 2026, Part D may cover the medicine for a different accepted medical use. Your plan must include it on its medicine list and approve any required request.

## The temporary Bridge works outside that benefit

GLP-1 medicines copy a signal the body uses to help control hunger and blood sugar. That natural chemical message is called a hormone.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge charges eligible members $50 per monthly supply, running from July 2026 through December 2027 in the September 2026 record.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

Under September 2026 terms, you pay the Bridge charge without first meeting the Part D deductible, the amount normally paid before plan payments begin. What you spend on the Bridge stays outside Part D’s yearly limit for your own payments. Keep them separate when adding up your drug costs.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

Under September 2026 Bridge terms, there is no extra payment help for people with low incomes. Coupons and discount programs cannot lower what the Bridge charges.

## Eligibility needs an individual check

The September 2026 Bridge rules consider age, weight in relation to height, certain health conditions, plan type and earlier Part D medicine use. Before the program pays, it requires both an approved request and a prescription.

For people with type 2 diabetes, the September 2026 Bridge rules direct the request to ordinary Part D coverage instead.

In September 2026, the Bridge list allowed only certain medicines and versions, such as tablets or particular injection pens. Ask which exact version your prescription names.

- Can someone with my type of plan use that program?

- Who sends the request and checks the exact tablet or injection pen?

## Keep this thought

Ask whether your prescription would go through ordinary Part D or the temporary Bridge. Use that answer when planning your costs.

This is a guide for thinking through care and its costs, with no appointments or medicine to offer.
