# Find out which medicine is actually offered.

Suppose the word compounded appears beside an attractive price. Before comparing it with another offer, ask what that word changes.

## Compounding changes what was reviewed

When a medicine is compounded, a pharmacist, doctor or registered facility mixes ingredients or changes the medicine for a patient. It is different from supplying the drug company’s ready-made approved product.

Checked September 17, 2026 for this claim.

The finished compounded product receives no FDA approval, nor a pre-sale review of quality, safety or effectiveness; that is the September 2026 position.

[FDA · the review a compounded product lacks](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/understanding-risks-compounded-drugs)

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

FDA describes compounding as potentially appropriate if a patient needs something the approved product cannot provide, or if that product is unavailable.

## A cheaper compounded copy needs more questions

This rule is about a pharmacy making a compounded copy. It is separate from a pharmacy dispensing a ready-made medicine.

Under September 2026 rules, ordinary pharmacies cannot regularly make compounded copies of medicines already available to buy. For an exception, the prescribing professional must decide that the change creates a significant difference for the individual patient.

Someone unable to swallow tablets might need another form of medicine; someone allergic to a dye might need a preparation that leaves it out.

Under that September 2026 legal rule, a lower price alone does not make a compounded copy qualify for the exception.

Semaglutide is the medicine in Wegovy, used for weight management, and Ozempic, used for type 2 diabetes.

For weight management, tirzepatide carries the brand name Zepbound; for type 2 diabetes, its brand name is Mounjaro.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

At the September 2026 check, FDA listed no national shortage of semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Checked September 26, 2026 for this claim.

An old shortage announcement cannot explain today’s offer. Ask the person prescribing and the pharmacy why the proposed medicine meets the rules.

## Ask for the basis in plain words

- What patient need does this preparation address?

- What approved options have we discussed?

- Which pharmacy would make this, and where can I check its licence?

- Can you explain the product’s current status in writing?

Keep that explanation separate from the price. Both answers matter to a considered decision.

## Keep this thought

Do not let “custom” do all the explaining. Ask what is different for the patient being assessed.

This is a guide for thinking through care and its costs, with no appointments or medicine to offer.
