# Check the tax account before spending it.

Suppose the payment page offers a health spending account option. You want to know what paperwork the company running your account needs.

## Spell out the account names

A health savings account is shortened to HSA. A flexible spending arrangement uses the letters FSA. These accounts hold money set aside before tax to meet qualifying medical expenses.

The administrator is the person or company running the account. Ask it which rules apply to your expense. A payment option leaves that question open.

## The reason for spending matters

This is a general explanation of the rule. Ask the administrator what records it wants for your expense.

## Keep the paperwork question precise

A letter of medical necessity explains why the person treating you says you need the care. In September 2026, account administrators could request this letter, though IRS rules did not name it as a requirement.

- What documents do you need before reimbursing this expense?

- Does the care fee qualify separately from the medicine?

- What service description and receipt details do you need?

- Does a bundled device or subscription need a separate decision?

Under September 2026 IRS guidance, a fitness watch, ring or body sensor generally qualifies only if bought and used mainly to diagnose or treat a specific disease. Tracking your general health is not enough.

## Keep this thought

Keep the receipt, care purpose and administrator’s reply together. A symbol or message on a payment page saying an account is accepted cannot answer those questions.

This is a guide for thinking through care and its costs, with no appointments or medicine to offer.
